With over 20 years of working within the IT sector, I have gained valuable experience covering a wide range of fields and topics. I have been involved with the development of dynamic Web solutions using various server side scripting languages, providing network and product support (telephone and on-site), network integration and project management, automated server management, application deployment and virtualisation. I also have seventeen years’ experience of managing high availability Linux servers, including 24/7 payment processing within a PCI-DSS framework. SRE Manager (Full time), March 2020 - Oct 2022

Truepill Ltd - Remote

Initial sole member of the DevOps/SRE team (was 13 people in total) maintaining and creating infrastructure within AWS and GCP. Working closely with developers creating deployment pipelines. Reviewing process with regards to PCI-DSS and DSP compliance. Implementing monitoring solutions and the creation of On-call including runbooks. Interviewing new SRE engineers, training, 1-2-1’s and mentoring. This role has been 100% remote based since the end of March 2020.

DevOps Consultant (Contractor), August 2016 - December 2019

Bosch Automotive - Manchester, Paris

Initial sole member of the DevOps team (5 people in total when I left) tasked with reviewing existing developer led deployment solutions. Implemented Terraform/BlueOcean deployment pipeline's using various global regions of the Amazon Cloud. Created the out of hours support and monitoring processes including documentation, customer ticket portal, 3rd party product investigation, purchase's and configuration. Assisted with interviewing new DevOps team members, training and mentoring

Linux/Ansible Engineer (Contractor), February 2016 - June 2016

PayBreak Ltd - Manchester

This was a short contract position to reverse engineer a legacy BASH deployment framework. The new solution used Ansible as the deployment/configuration tool. This role also included moving the clients existing rented server solution to AWS. The client’s production environment was also created and managed using Ansible.

Senior Systems Engineer (Full time), October 2011 - December 2015

Masabi Ltd - London

Design, implementation and day-2-day management of high availability production environments using various global regions of the Amazon Cloud. Platform security, puppet, product release cycles, system modifications, monitoring and documentation are all in accordance with PCI-DSS requirements. (EC2/Linux/Tomcat/Apache/MySQL)

Overseeing the transition from the previous PCI-DSS SAQd to PCI-DSS Level 1 compliance. Liaising with external staff such as our QSA, Penetration Testers and Product suppliers. Working closely with internal management and development teams. Ensuring all further server work is within accordance to PCI-DSS requirements.

Implementation, monitoring and management of internal company hardware and telephone systems. Providing support levels 1 to 3 for all company related network, hardware and development/staging environment issues. (Windows/Linux)

Linux Network Administrator (Full time), July 2009 - July 2011

Adaptavist Ltd - Remote, Manchester, Lisbon

Supported multiple Linux based servers running Atlassian products. Each server hosting between 1 and 40 clients dependent upon the purchased hosting package. Daily task's included management and monitoring of this equipment, fault finding and problem resolution, upgrades and dealing with clients to address individual requirements. Virtualisation also featured heavily during the last 12 months of this role.

Linux Network Administrator (Full time), January 2005 - July 2009

Payment Systems Ltd - London, Remote, Cape Town, Isle of Man

For this role I was a member of a small team that maintained the companies’ infrastructure which provided high availability, real time, on-line credit card payment solutions. The production environment was hosted on the Isle of Man and consisted of finely tuned SuSE servers, Tomcat and SQL clusters. I also worked closely with remote developers throughout the software release cycle. The last 24 months of this role was remote working due to relocating to Manchester.

Linux/Windows Network Engineer (Full time), November 2003 - November 2004

Realworld Computer Solutions - London

This position involved remote, telephone and on-site technical support for a large portfolio of clients within central London. My duties included managing/trouble shooting production servers (domain controllers, file servers and exchange), installation of servers and client machines, all hardware issues, server upgrades (software and hardware), third party software support and any other issues that may arise in a busy working environment. The role was client facing, and customers ranged from graphic designers, accountants, publishing houses and the Royal courts of Justice.

I was responsible for implementing a functional and effective network structure. The school now has an integrated Windows 2000 server with active directory, full profiling, shared resources and over 30 XP professional client machines.

Network Administrator (Freelance - Evenings), July 2003

Seductive-UK Ltd - London

Working on a freelance basis, I assessed all hardware requirements for this new Web Development Company. I was then responsible for the purchase, installation and configuration of all Windows 2000 and Linux development servers, also the set-up of all developer’s machines. I was also responsible for the configuration of IIS and Apache web servers, incorporating the PHP scripting language and MySQL relational databases.

Network Administrator (Full Time), August 2002 - August 2003

Testline Ltd - London

My responsibilities included the day-2-day monitoring and maintenance of all Windows NT Exchange servers, Windows 2000 (With Apache and MySQL) servers, SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional (With Apache and MySQL), Solaris 8 (Tetra T1 hardware with Apache and samba), and Novell Netware 8 file servers. I maintained around 50 client machines, all of which held a ghost (Norton’s) image of every Windows (95, 95b, 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 Pro/Server, NT Workstation/Server, XP Home and Professional) operating systems. I performed all machine maintenance and upgrades, and I was also responsible for all future hardware monitoring and purchases. A major part of my duties also involved being the sole provider of first and second line technical support for all 4Learning, Charanga, Lawpack, British Medical Journal, Adval and Nightingale QMS products. The help line topics covered a vast range of product problems from Installation to functionality. Customers who used these help lines ranged from Network Administrators of large companies and school networks to novice first time home users. I was also responsible for all on site network testing of all new RM (Research Machines) oriented applications. This includes RM network compatibility testing, Installation documentation and product development advice.

During this period I worked as a freelance web developer creating dynamic web solutions for a broad range of customers. I have extensive experience of working with PHP and MySQL on Linux platforms using Apaches web servers. As the sole project developer, I was responsible for all aspects of the products development cycle. University IT help desk (Part time), February 1998 - June 1999

University of North London - London
Whilst studying at the University of North London I provided technical support to students and lectures of the Computer Science department. This involved assisting with any software, hardware and coursework problems. I really enjoyed this role as it was a demanding IT environment, working with a wide base of random problems on a one-2-one basis. The IT department consisted of 3 floors of computer labs containing over 600 terminals, integrating NT workstations, Novel, Linux and UNIX environments.

Other Employment Positions and Brief History


I have been employed as a relief manager by Whitbread’s and Labatt’s Plc whilst living in Manchester. This involved managing small to large pubs and restaurants during the managers holiday periods. I have overseen up to 30 staff members, ensuring the smooth day-2-day running of these establishments. These roles proved to be extremely challenging and enjoyable. I have also undertaken warehouse (Manchester) and bakery (Aberystwyth) packing positions, Office temping (London), bar work (Spain and London), Community Service Volunteer (CSV) roles assisting Autistic and terminally ill individuals (Droitwich and Carmarthen respectively). I moved to London from Wales at the age of 25 to attend the University on North London as an enthusiastic mature student.

I originally attend the University of North London undertaking a BSC (Hons) Computer Science degree. I was unable to return and finish my final semester due to financial hardship and parental pressures. I have been working within the IT sector ever since. Due to my absence I was awarded a Diploma of Higher Education for Computer Science.

I was returning to full time education after a seven-year break consisting of traveling and trying various employment options. I undertook a foundation year at the above collage covering Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Electronics. I passed this course and was awarded a place at the University of North London.

Personal Statement

I regard myself as a dedicated and skilled IT individual. I have an ability to approach new and demanding problems, finding fast and effective solutions whilst actually enjoying the process. For most of my adult life I have worked in demanding and vibrant environments, I very much enjoy stimulating challenges and flourish under pressure.

Life outside of work is also very important to me; I enjoy being married and a father of three boys, traveling extensively abroad, motorbikes, photography, cinema, good food and wine (cooking and brewing), and my personal computers, Raspberry Pi’s and Arduino.
